copying DVDs

how do I copy a DVD onto my hard drive so I can watch it at a later time?
It's hard, and the interface is rather "scientific", but in a nutshell it's:
[a] File --> Convert/Save
or
File --> Stream
In both cases selecting the DVD disc as the source and a file on disk as the target.
