Hear mic upon Pause?

Hi
I'm trying to find a way to listen to music at work, whereby I can hit pause then hear through my laptop mic (e.g. when someone is talking to me). I wear in-ear phones (the sort that go right into the ear canal) so it's a pain removing them each time.
I have got the laptop configured to constantly play my mic through the earphones over the music, but thats a bit annoying when people are chatting away in the background!
I'd like to be able to pause the music, and the mic automatically wakes up.
Any ideas, or is this just unfeasible?
