Trouble getting some DAR snapshots
Posted: 26 May 2013 21:42
Hi there,
Don't know if someone can help me out with this but I'll give it a try. I'm using version 2.0.6 although I tried versions 2.0.5 and 2.0.4 with the same problem. I'm running Windows 7 64 bits. All preferences (except for the folder where snapshots are stored) are the default preferences.
I've been using VLC for a long time now as my main playback software. Lately I started having the need to take snapshots with it. I need to take them in native DAR (Display Aspect Ratio) and not in SAR (Storage Aspect ratio).
As I understand VLC will do this by default and, in fact, it does... Most of the times at least. I'm having a few problems with some files though. I can't seem to take snapshots of these in DAR and have to force the correct resolution.
This is the mediainfo log of one of the files where, for the life of me, I couldn't make it take a native resolution screenshot without forcing the correct resolution:
Format : AVI
Format/Info : Audio Video Interleave
File size : 865 MiB
Duration : 1h 4mn
Overall bit rate : 1 872 Kbps
Writing application : VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.2 (build 2540/release)
Writing library : VirtualDubMod build 2540/release
Video
ID : 0
Format : MPEG-4 Visual
Format profile : Advanced Simple@L5
Format settings, BVOP : 1
Format settings, QPel : No
Format settings, GMC : No warppoints
Format settings, Matrix : Custom
Codec ID : XVID
Codec ID/Hint : XviD
Duration : 1h 4mn
Bit rate : 1 732 Kbps
Width : 666 pixels
Height : 512 pixels
Display aspect ratio : 1.406
Original display aspect ratio : 4:3
Frame rate : 29.970 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 8 bits
Scan type : Progressive
Compression mode : Lossy
Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.170
Stream size : 801 MiB (93%)
Writing library : XviD 1.2.1 (UTC 2008-12-04)
I left the Audio specs out as they are not relevant. So, the SAR is 666x512. However, the DAR is 719x512. I'll leave you a screenshot of an abbreviated log of mediainfo provided by a script used in the place I'm a member of:

When I playback this AVI with VLC (in this case version 2.0.5) and am about to take the snapshot this is the image I get:
http://ptpimg.me/5ph1rq.png
I'm not meddling with any preferences. It's complete vanilla.
The resulting snapshot is:
http://ptpimg.me/s38704.png
(in 666x512 SAR)
I don't like KMPlayer and I'm not planning on using it unless I really have to but this is the resolution I get when I take a snapshot with it:
http://ptpimg.me/6de7x0.png
(the aspect ratio here is 844x600 which is the same ratio as 719x512 = 1.406 - the DAR)
As I said this happens every once in a while but, still, it's a nuisance. What am I doing wrong? I've asked several people in the forums I'm a member of and everyone keeps telling me that, no matter the aspect ratio of what I'm watching, VLC will convert it to the native aspect ratio when taking a snapshot. And it does. Just not with every file..
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks in advance,
Sylar
