Can VLC play these subtitles while streaming?

Due to better performance on a an old computer I'm taking the stream-link and playing it in VLC, instead of in chrome's built in flash player.

The website (svtplay.se) I want to get it to work from uses the web srt format (.wsrt) for external (not hardcoded) subtitles. On some videos one can enable or disable them when visiting via browser. If I download the subtitle and convert to .srt and open the file while streaming vlc stops playing. Adding the subtitle link in "play another media synchronous" option in stream/network options doesn't work either.

The computer is running windows XP pro SP3, vlc 2.0.6 32bit.
