no audio and pixel noise on recording playback

I'm suddenly having a problem recording little "snippets" of video. It worked fine until maybe a week ago but now upon playback I'm getting no audio and the video is choppy and pixelated.I think I'm still doing it right.I start playing the original video in video l. hit the record button allow it to run the desired amount of time then hit record again.
Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
