DVD menu not functioning!

I have just received some instructional dvd's from America. They play fine on my standard dvd player but when i play them on my computer using vlc 2.0.5 or wmp they will start up okay and will play on the menu screen only. when I click on the various lessons on the screen nothing happens. the only way to access the lessons is from the drop down on the menu bar but then it does not recognise the video and just lists it as 'title 1', 'title 2' etc not in sequential order. Sorry it's a bit long winded! Please help !!!
