I just discovered that vlc has EPG support, and thought I'd give it a shot with the transport stream from my Earthsoft PT-2.
Good news: Something appeared.
Bad news: It's scrambled.

This is likely a character encoding issue, as the text is quite possibly Shift-JIS or another Japanese codepage.

As Japan uses its own competing ISDB standards to ETSI DVB, there are no incentive to support Japanese there... In fact, the EPG and EIT specifications have no provisions for carrying the Japanese scripts, other than as plain UCS-2 Unicode.

You should post a short TS sample file and report a bug on VLC Trac, but I cannot promise that this will ever work because Japan is so specific when it comes to digital TV.

Well, I looked at (what seems to be) the specification fpr ISDB text. This is going to be very difficult to implement (and outright impossible for someone like me who cannot read Kanjis).

As Rémi said, for non-Japanese speakers, it's too difficult. And for me, too :( .
But I'll send my patch for supporting ISDB-T(ARIB specification, not only EPG but other features like subtitles).
Please wait for a little.
