If you plan ever use QT5 with VLC then please do not ever force users to use opengl, it is quite bad that QT5 tries to force opengl down throat(little rant). I have nothing against 3D apps but for casual apps no GPU requirements please.

VLC already requires GPU acceleration. You can't decode HD video in real-time in software with a typical processor.
