How to force vlc audio to output through hdmi cable?

I recently updated VLC player and now I have a problem. I used to be able to set my default audio output in windows to my tv, open a video in vlc, and then change my default output back to my computer speakers and vlc would continue playing through the tv. Now even while a video is playing if I change the default audio output vlc will change right away, mid video.
Is there an option to fix this? I haven't had much luck changing the audio output in vlc, it doesn't correspond to the list of outputs windows provides.
