vlc crashes with new monitor

using windows xp, vlcappver 0.8.2.0
i've never had a problem before, however this evening i connected the pc up to my new lcd tv via dvi - a sharp ga3 if that matters.
it's widescreen.
now, with the pc connected, when i try to start vlc i always get the message
appname vlc.exe appver 0.8.2.0 modname msvcrt.dll
modver 7.0.2600.2180 offset 00037740
basically the error message!
and it crashes.
anyone experienced this before? - can it really be monitor related or is it maybe a coincidence?
i've uninstalled and re-installed vlc to no avail.
