How to load playlist into VLC from weblink (not in browser)

I'm trying to work out how I can have a series of playlist links on a web page that when clicked with import the playlist directly into VLC. I don't want to have it play through the browser as a) I want to be able to control the playing of the list remotely from the VLC mobile app and b) the people that will be using it won't be that technically proficient and so I need it to be as simple as possible. The page with the links will be behind a login page so I can control who has access to them.

Any thoughts?

Depending how VLC and the browser are set up, the browser can offer to open playlist files (such as *.xspf or *.m3u) in the media player.

As mentioned in another post, the playlist file downloads and then is loaded into the player. This causes problems with how I'm trying to link the playlist to the folder (on the server). Any way of the playlist being read by the player from the server rather than downloading it locally first?
