Ordered chapters in MKV files not working properly.

(I searched and didn't find anything. My apologies if someone has already brought this up.)
Currently, playing Matrsoka video that utilizes ordered chapters results in VLC starting the linked segment at the appropriate time, but when that segment concludes, VLC starts a few seconds before the previous chapter mark (the time on the seek bar regresses as well) and does not play audio, until it catches up to where it was supposed to start and then plays normally. I've observed this on both Windows and OS X versions of VLC 2.0.4. as well as the latest nightly build, I've tested a variety of relevant files from differing sources, and the files in question play properly in other media players (mplayer2 and MPC-HC), which makes me think the issue isn't with the particular files.
Am I just doing something wrong, maybe?
(Since the sticky asks for it: In my personal case, I'm using OS X 10.7.5 and Windows Vista)

Hi,
It's probably a bug in vlc... could you please share the verbose logs? Tools->Messages set verbosity to 2 then start playback (from a stopped state not a paused one). If you have a way to share the files, it would help me to debug faster.

Log:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/1omoob
As for the files used, is it okay if I link you to a torrent for them? No free filehosts I know of seem to be working out. The torrent is
here, the files used are [Coalgirls]_Toradora_03_(1280x720_Blu-ray_FLAC)_[D2C3326E].mkv, [Coalgirls]_Toradora_ED1_(1280x720_Blu-ray_FLAC)_[77220C66].mkv and [Coalgirls]_Toradora_OP1_(1280x720_Blu-ray_FLAC)_[215EB2F1].mkv. If pointing you to a torrent isn't okay for various reasons, I fully understand. If that's the case, let me know and I'll see if maybe I can try again and find an alternative solution. Likewise, if there's anything else you want me to include, let me know and I'll comply as best I'm able.

I don't know if this is the right thread to put it in, but when I try using the latest nightly build to watch these videos the audio is always 2 seconds too fast, and I have to set a 2000 ms delay. The reason I post this here, is that I was testing the nightly build to see if it fixed my problems with having the audio and the subtitles cut off in the Toradora videos whenever it switched via the ordered chapters portion. The audio is now fixed, but subtitles always disappear whenever it switches the videos. Plus, they turn off just slightly before the videos switch, meaning I can't tell what is being said just before it happens.
Edit: I'm on the latest version of Lion (OSX 10.7.5) if that helps. I'm struggling to watch these videos, and the nightly also made it really jittery and glitchy to just watch at times as well, so it's frustrating because either I lose sound and subtitles every opening/closing credits switch, or I have to deal with weird artifacts in playback and still lose the subtitles.

Always with coalgirls' Toradora episodes if yes which numbers?
What do you exactly mean by lose subtitles?
Can you share the verbose logs?

I can't figure out the verbose logs thing, but what I mean is that the subtitles turn off when the ordered chapters change. Like, they change to disabled. And, I suspect the audio thing is a different problem in VLC itself and not related because I have that problem on other videos I tried watching. But yeah, the only videos I have with Ordered Chapters are the Coalgirls Toradora ones, and I have the issue on every single episode. It always happens no matter what. The subtitles just turn off when the ordered chapter changes to another video.

I don't know the OSX GUI but verbose logs should hide in Tools->Messages (iirc the logs are already verbose for mac) then open your file and paste here the whole output.
You can turn the subtitle on again afterward? You have this issue only with 2.1? Subtitles shouldn't have been affected by my latest segment changing patch... I'll test that tonight.

Okay, I found it in Window>Messages. I'll get that to you in a minute, but first I'll answer the other questions. I can indeed turn the subtitles back on. I have always had this issue, with 2.0.5 and a different version I was using before (Not sure which one, I just updated to the latest in an attempt to fix it). I updated to the nightly build because it would also do the same with audio, and I looked around and it appeared that you may have fixed it, and indeed you had, but it appears the subtitles problem still exists.

So you had the subtitle problem in 2.0.5? Does they come back when you switch back from OP to episode? The subtitles of the OP have an undefined language parameter (even they have the name English) which may screw the libvlc selection.

It does it every time it switches out any chapter. If I turn them back on during OP they turn off coming back into the video and then if I turn them back on during the video they go back off during ED. I also encountered it doing this with audio once on an episode where the audio wasn't defined as Japanese, but all the rest have worked fine as far as audio goes. I definitely had the problem in 2.0.5. Is there a way to fix it, because I would really like it to work like it is supposed to.

I was asking what happens if you don't reactivate them during the opening. The audio and subtitle selection don't use the same process and the audio problem was surely another bug. What's strange is that the default track language in mkv is english so the maker of the file specifically made it undefined.
In any case I cannot really tell what the problem is without debuging it myself so I'll check tonight (in CET timezone). Did you set language subtitle preferences?
If the problem is really the language issue it will need some core rework because a demux should not try to override user preferences if any.
I'll keep you updated.

I went back and checked and it does not bring the subtitles back after the credits even if I don't turn them on again. It also turns them off just slightly before the chapter ends, meaning that I often miss the last thing said and (due to having to reactivate them manually) the first thing said directly surrounding the chapter transition.

The cut is due to the chapter transition... I don't think I can do something about it.

I don't reproduce with the file I got for the first bug. What episode are you playing?
I used the ep 14 like in the logs without problem

Hello,
I have a pretty similar problem. I try to play an episode of a series (*.mkv) which seems to embed seperate files for the opening and ending, and whenever it gets to the new chapter there is no sound. Clicking on the timebar directly works but leaving it playing through the whole episode doesn't give me any sound.
Using intel onboard graphics (hybrid laptop with Intel + nVidia)
VLC 2.1.3
Arch Linux (up to date)
Tried compiling 2.1.3 myself but that didn't solve the problem. Even worse, other players like Totem/xine or (s)mplayer just skip the openings and endings. This is really frustrating since listening to good opening and ending tracks makes the series 30% more watchable.
Here's a nice verbose output log:
Code: Select all

[0x7fb8ecd36ce8] main decoder debug: using decoder module "libass"
[0x7fb900c01968] mkv demux debug: seek got 0 (0%)
Those are the first messages after the new chapter kicks in and before I use CTRL-C to cancel the process. I'll try playing it on Ubuntu later too to be sure.
(By the way, the series I watch is an Anime too
)

I hate to necro an old thread, but I'm more or less having the same issue, ironically also with Coalgirls' Toradora. Basically 2-3 seconds before the chapter/segment change, audio cuts, subs vanish just slightly afterwards (during dialogue if it's present) and then it plays the opening without issue other than a minor audio stutter ~1 second into the opening. I'm thinking that part is from lag or something but I'm not the expert. The same thing will happen after the opening; audio will drop out for a couple of seconds while it "returns" to the episode, during which the video is "paused" right back where the episode picks up, until the audio "catches up" so to speak. The audio doesn't de-sync or anything on return, it's more as if the video stream stops and waits while the audio loads, although that's highly unlikely to actually be the case. It's kinda like if your stream was buffering.
Anyway, playing around with the Stream Output Muxer Caching seemed to improve things, but that may have just been luck with not having dialogue near the transition for the episodes after I changed it.
The cut is due to the chapter transition... I don't think I can do something about it.
Since this is the issue, are there any settings I could tweak to help it function properly? I've played Toradora without issue with an older version of VLC, not sure of the number but I'm pretty sure it was Two Flower, on both win 8 and the same win 7 pc I'm using now. My last watch was in December of last year, and since then I've updated VLC and am currently up to date. Is there any reason Two Flower could have handled this transition better?
