Streaming web feeds

I am brand new to VLC, I've googled for a solution to my problem, peeked at the VideoLAN wiki, the FAQ but I can't seem to find an answer. I'm not sure if I'm trying something that the software doesn't support. I am not trying to provide a stream, I'm trying to watch internet streams that I believe are passively streaming. I'm trying "Open Network Stream..". I can't seem to get any stream that I try to open to actually play. What is the criteria to be able to play it? Is this even what it is meant for? For instance, I would like to watch Fox News, it is streaming at http://live.foxnews.com. Should this work? Thanks!

You need the precise stream URL.

I feel stupid asking but how can I find the precise stream URLor know that I have the precise stream URL? If there is a wiki on it I would go for that too so you don't have to spoon feed it to me :)
