Subtitles, load Flahspalyer autocreated Subtitles?

VLC, trying to load Subtitles
example: the video (mp4)
http://medien.wdr.de/m/1347631205/linde ... 120916.mp4
the subtitle file:
http://www.lindenstrasse.de/Folgen/2012 ... 6_576k.xml
downloaded both, the ladder as x.xml
The subtitle file opens without error message, but no subtitles display.
I've tried reading:
wiki.videolan.org /Subtitles
and used suffixes which are encoded XML, like *.TTXT
but the problem remains as above.
I'm stumped. Then how do I get the Subtitles to display?
FWIW
this is "the" public channel "ARD" in Germany, handing out its biggest series (and others) for free
with subtitles in German -> if you use a browser, say Google Chrome, you can see the
subtitles alright.
The problem is, that it is seldom feasible to have internet all the time, so I go download
the mp4 file. The problem is, that the subtitles seem auto-created for the flash-player instead of
being part of the mp4 file.
(see comment at top of:
http://www.lindenstrasse.de/Folgen/2012 ... 6_576k.xml
^->displaying it in Firefox with Javascript disabled, says:
"XML Subtitle File for Flash Player" and "Created by FAB Subtitler"
)
For viewing the subtitles in flash, eg Google Chrome, then:
http://www.lindenstrasse.de/Folgen/2012/Folge_1396.jsp
-> "Zum Video"
->(play the video, wait for people to talk)
->check bottom, second button/icon
hovering with mousepointer it'll say:
"Untertitel einschalten (U)"
->then if you click it -> Subtitles appear
(until you click the same button again to toggle subtitles off)
(a native speaker of German, I find the subtitles excellent and I'm trying
to get this work so that non-natives can use it for learning German)
