Occasionally VLC comes up with no video window, just a small oblong rectangle, rather like WinAmp. That is what I want! Then this interface disappears and I can't find a way to get it back. Help.

I use a Windows machine, but I'm guessing that this is not a Windows specific issue.

Just click on the playlist button to hide it and resize to the size you want.

Thanks, but I can't make your suggestion give me what I want. Besides, I don't want to click on any buttons; I want the program to come up in the way I described.

It will restart in the way it was closed. And you can make it oblong rectangle.
