newer VLC gives blue tint but old does not?

On Ubuntu Linux 10.04, VLC 1.1.13 plays all videos with a blue tint (everybody looks like a smurf) unless I change the output module to "X11 video (XCB)".

The older version of VLC 1.0.6 plays all videos with no tint at all using the default output, which I understand uses less CPU than switching to X11.

How can I get the newer version to play video without switching to the higher CPU usage output?

Update to latest VLC release and file a bug if it still fails.
