Equaliser not working - not affecting sound

Thanks for VLC I have been using it to play media files for years. A sanity saver.

Version 2.0.3 Twoflower
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 - patched up to date.

The Equaliser does not affect the sound.

I have used it previously some versions ago and it worked then. I only use it in extremis, for example when playing audio books which use low bit rates and sound dire. I have sometimes improved the sound with the equaliser. The one I am listening to now is 24000Hz Stereo AAC and it does not sound too good.

Menu/tools/effects and filters/Enable (check box)/set desired levels.

This still has no effect on sound at all.

Tried 2 pass.

Even when all sliders are full down there is no effect at all when Enable is toggled.

I have also checked the:-
Menu/Tools/Preferences/All/Audio/Filters/Equaliser with 10 bands (check box)

Still no action.

Thanks, tried that, no difference.

The preferences did reset since the
Menu/Tools/Preferences/All/Audio/Filters/Equaliser with 10 bands (check box)
got unchecked by the action.

I tried both with the check box ticked and unticked.

The equaliser settings i.e. the positions of the sliders did not get changed by resetting the preferences.

I am thinking I may try an unistall, remove any registry entries I can find (as long as there are not hundreds or worse), and re-install. I have done many VLC upgrades but never a clean re-install over the years.
