VLC saves streams in mp4 container by default

Postby Lucas Malor » 24 Aug 2012 01:07

When I tried to save this stream:
http://mediapolis.rai.it/relinker/relin ... eeqqEEqual
with VLC, doing:
  1. Open network stream
  2. Stream
  3. Save to file without transcoding
I noticed VLC used the mp4 container. I had to manually change the extension of the file to .asf at the Generated string output stream, even if I specified it for the output file.

The questions are:
  1. why the file extension is not taken into account?
  2. can't VLC detect the type of streams and choose the correct container accordingly?

Hi
With VLC-2.0.3
Try this method instead...
VLC > View > Advanced Controls

Then...
Media > Open Location from clipboard > Play

Then click the red "Record" button

File is saved in asf format...
Like this...

Code: Select all

vlc-record-2012-08-24-05h32m40s-mmsh___a1124.v560967.c56096.g.vm.akamaistream.net_7_1124_56096_v0001_rainet.download.akamai.com_56228_Rai_comici_516616.wmv_MSWMExt=.asf-.asf

I tried the method you reported, but in that way I record the screen output, not the streams. So I must see and hear the video meanwhile and I can't see anything else, a big problem with adult videos :-P Furthermore if the output lags, the lag is recorded!

Edit: changed the thread title, it's more generic now.
