Ripping a DVD to mp4 h264 errors

I am trying to rip a DVD to an MP4 file with an H264 codec in Windows 7, using VLC 2.02 Twoflower.

The command that I am running is:

vlc dvdsimple:///D:\ --sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,acodec=mp4a}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,dst=C:\\bogus\\HatFieldsAndMcCoys.mp4}

At the beginning and end of the rip, I get the following:
Streaming / Transcoding failed:
VLC could not open the encoder.
Streaming / Transcoding failed:
VLC could not open the encoder.

The file does get created, but there is no audio.

I hope this is a simple issue that has a similar workaround.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks, changing the Audio codec to mp3 resolved the error dialog, and the transcode succeeded without any indicated exceptions. But...when playing back in VLC, the audio is skippy/garbled. It audio and video plays in Windows Media Player. When streaming from a web page, there is no audio at all.

Here is the audio codec information from the transcoded MP4 from VLC (where the audio is garbled):

Codec: MPEG Audio layer 1/2/3 (mpga)

I do have another h264 encoded file, which wasn't transcoded from VLC, and it plays both audio and video perfectly in VLC, Media Player, and when streaming from a web page (via HTML5's "<VIDEO>" tag.).

Here is the audio coded information from the non-VLC transcoded file (where the audio is perfect in all players)

Codec: MPEG AAC Audio (mp4a)

Is there a reason why the mp4a audio codec cannot be used?

Seems like a bug in 2.0.2
