Position/scale of PGS subtitles

When you take Bluray PGS subtitles which were originally on a 1080p Bluray, and mux them with a 720p encode of same, the position and size is wrong.
They appear in the lower right corner and too big.
MPC-HC correctly positions them in the centre and at the correct scale.

Those PGS subtitles are wrongly encoded.

I converted some 1080p Blurays to a 720p MKV with Handbrake (always using the latest nightly build) and am experiencing the same problem: the PGS subtitles are far too big, as if VLC "thinks" that the movie display size is still at 1920x1080, and not 1280x720 pixels.
The subtitles are displayed correctly with MPC-HC and the WDC TV Live SMP. Hardware players are usually rather unforgiving towards non-standard video files so it appears to me that the PGS subtitles are encoded correctly.
For testing purposes, I converted the same Blurays to MP4 with Handbrake and the subtitles are OK when played with VLC, so the issue seems to be limited to rescaled MKVs.
Could it still be a PGS encoding issue or is it rather something within VLC?
