saving subtitles on mp4 and avi files

Postby wangjing » 17 Jul 2012 04:38

Hi, This is my first post on this site.
I have .mp4 and .avi file and I have been using VLC to watch them with srt subtitle files. I would like to know how I can save the .mp4 and .avi files with subtitles on the file. In a way that they are on the movie permanently and cannot be removed. So that I can watch them using different software and on different devices without the need of the srt files.
I have spent a lot of time reading the site to find an answer. If anyone can help me it will be great. If it is not possible please tell me. Thanks.

You can use soverlay for that.

Never used soverlay function in VLC, but I know another opensource/free video edit program which can do this easily

I only don't know if I'm allowed to post that :P

Besides VLC you can use Avidemux, its a free video editor and good for basic editing.
http://avidemux.sourceforge.net

Load video and set video and audio on the left side to the codec you desire.
Then open video>filter and select subtitle add it, and save the video.
