Where is the log file?

Occasionally I receive an error and the message ends advising me to check the log file. Where is it? How do find it?

Menu Tools -> Messages
Or hit Ctrl+M.

Two things strike me about this problem:
1. Perhaps the message should say "look in tools > messages" instead of recommending the "log file"
2. Since it is not Windows-specific (I just had the same problem on linux), maybe the thread could be moved to a more general section
3. Here I am suggesting work for other people, but of course I cannot do these things myself - or of course I would.
