mp4 update seek index of existing file - possible

Hi. I have tried searching for a previous topic on this. But I'm not certain what the correct terms to describe the problem is so I might have missed some relevant thread.
I have captured a streaming mp4/flv file that can be viewed in VLC but where seeking (jumping from playing the start of the file to the middle of it) takes a long time. When I then use the VLC command convert and save the output the newly created file has much faster seeking - just what I want. However when I do that on large files (~10 gigabytes) then creating the new copy takes time. Can VLC instead only update the parts of the existing file that needs changing instead of saving a completely new file?
