H.264 on Tiger

Postby charly » 11 May 2005 11:21

Hi!
JFYI:
I just tried one of Apple's H.264-Trailers (http://images.apple.com/movies/us/hd_ga ... _1080p.zip) on Tiger (10.4, G5). On the website Apple says it's 1280x544 while QT says its 1920x816 (AAC, Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz H.264, 1920 x 816, Millions).
I tried 0.8.1 and http://xserve.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/maco ... 091359.dmg. 0.8.1 crashes just after a few seconds while with the newer version the video playpack freezes while sound is played fine (video is updated somewhere during playback for some seconds and freezes again).
Video playback in QT is not smooth also but jerking. Haven't been able to test this with another player yet to see if this is because of bad encoding or bad playback.

HTH. Greetings, Charly!

Haven't been able to test this with another player yet to see if this is because of bad encoding or bad playback.
That's most likely due to the fact that your computer is simply not fast enough. As stated on Apple's homepage, you need at least a G5-CPU to play these files accurately.

Error in Tiger

Postby David Heady » 12 May 2005 17:53

First let me express my gratitude for any asistance offered here. As Microsoft's Media Player is apparently unable to run in Tiger, I turned to VLC media player. A movie that I had previously downloaded ran fine when I had installed VLC 0.8.1 for Mac OSX, however, upon any further downloads, I get this error message:
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.
And the progress thumb slides along, but no view window or sound. I'm running a Powerbook 15" with a gig of RAM and Tiger. Advise on what I'm doing wrong would be accepted with gratitude. Thanks

Subtitles with Tiger: it works fine now with this new release:

http://xserve.via.ecp.fr/~videolan/maco ... 091359.dmg

Thanks for this great work!

Et excusez mon anglais approximatif.

VLC est un soft vraiment indispensable pour les MacUsers.
Je ne peux que confirmer ! Merci mille fois pour ce soft et la réactivité des développeurs !

David - as mentioned on the Features page, the WMV3 codec is only supported within the Windows version of VLC. No mention is made of when other VLC clients will support this codec (given its integration with Digital Rights Management technologies), and I'm not even sure Windows Media Player for the Mac supports it because of the DRM limitations. - jc

When playback stops after several minutes then that is the crash in the audio layer. It is a known issue.

VLC Audio crash

Postby Striker_21 » 15 May 2005 06:58

Please give us a shout when the audio layer crashes should be fixed in the nightly's or a beta so we can test it. For now VLC is pretty much useless on Tiger. Thanks for all your hard work fixing these bugs.

VLC will support wmv3 the day VC1 goes public ... (at least noDRM wmv3)

I have this problem both on my brand new Powermac G5 (with the 9650) and my PB 1.67GHz.

Both machines support Quarz Extreme and are on Tiger.

If you still have questions (crash logs?) drop me an email at: snowrunner AT Gmail DOT com

That's enough people. I don't need MORE reports. Not that i figured out how to solve it, but more information is just more of the same at this point.

I used 0.8.2-test1 beta on tiger and I found another "bug"...

I'm playing .avi and .mpg files. When I try to resize the window by draggin the corner of the playing window it crashes tiger. Grey screen of death. Forces a reboot. Then I lose spotlight and all other menu bars items on reboot until I log out and log back in again.

0.8.1 just locks up VLC when I do this but 0.8.2 kills Tiger which makes it totally unusuable.

I'd be happy to give more system info or any other details if that would help...

Please provide report about 10.4.1 behavior. Did anything change from 10.4 to 10.4.1 for you?
