Imho its time to extensive bugseek. And for the first bugfix-only-release. Without new features.
exactly!

VLC has a serious deficiency in developers. We develop what we need and want personally a lot of the time. However VLC has gotten so large that this isn't a proper development cycle anymore. Still without the development team of programs like MPlayer, we just can't do that much.

Still the introduction of our trac system: http://trac.videolan.org
has made quite a difference already in a few weeks. hopefully the proces will improve over time. The fact remains however that without a developer that cares about certain modules because they are HIS, (like the portaudio module), their stability will just be very flacky.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

Activating any of the deinterlace filters on some files make vlc crash (it works with low res mpeg1 .mpgs , hangs up with just about everything else, even if it's low res)... I remember something similar happening looong ago, in 0.7.2 or 0.8.0... not sure.

@ jvh: BTW. You seem to have certain knowledge on programming for Mac OS X. Are you interested in taking part of VLC's future development? It is not as hard as it might seem actually.
If I can help you on testing new builds of videolan, I'm happy to do so.
I'm not really a programmer, but as IT-consultant, I need the latest software available...

Thanks for the tip !

After upgrading from 0.8.1 to 0.8.2, I am unable keep VLC open. Within max 8 secs it unexpectedly quits. This happens both when I just open VLC from apps folder, or when i click a file that opens in VLC - it will play a few seconds, then just quit. 0.8.1 worked fine, but reinstalling htat didn't help either...

Restarts, repaired permissions etc no worky.

OSX v 10.4.1, had APE installed but after reading above posts unistalled it to no avail.
Got the same problem here, only using OSX 10.3.9.

This means the unsanity software is making the VLC application crash.
Unsanity APE is still a hack. and running on an unstable 10.4.2 Developer software release as well. That's like two unstable elements on top of eachother.
Disabling APE does not entirely solves my problem...

NSRaiseError. I have seen this before. you need to delete your org.videolan.vlc.plist preference file.

Hello,
I have noticed some problems running dvd with subtitles on the last version of vlc (Windows XP, vlc 0.8.2)
Sometimes it appears grey and blur so that the text is badly visible.
It also don't recognize very well the subtitles
the 3 subtitle is in fact the second wich is french.
The dvd I run (Mars Attacks) appears to be perfectly functionning on windows media player.
Is that a problem from my configuration?

Somehow version 0.8.2 still doesn't fix the screensaver problem for me. Using WinXP on a Dell Inspiron 6000. Is there any trick that i miss?

Did you add "screensaver" in the interfaces list ? (in the prefs)

The "screensaver" interface is only for linux. It should work out of the box under Windows

Try resetting the preferences. Last time it didn't work for someone, he resetted his prefs and then the screensaver was properly blocked. (I have NO clue why.)

Where is it?

Postby number8838 » 30 Jun 2005 04:09

I'm pleased that version 0.8.2 is out--and hopeful that it will work with FC4 and I will have VLC again.

But where is it?

If I go to the Fedora Core download page I get version 0.8.1
I found an RPM on stantz.freshrpms but it has dependency issues (with things that don't seem to exist).

Vector Linux 4.0
kernel 2.4.28
gcc 3.2.2

As in previous tests of 0.8.2, the "repeat all" and "repeat one" buttons in the Playlist window do not function.

I was able to get a repeat playback via checking that in Preferences/Playlist/General and saving the new Preferences. So the problem seems to be the lack of functioning of the buttons in the Playlist window itself.

Thanks.

Wouldn't it be sensible to remove 0.82 from download on the OSX version and leave 0.81 until this is sorted?

No, because 0.8.2 works for at least 433,407 people (only on OSX. there are at least 1,350,528 windows users as well) and only the few who tried APE have problems with it.
Additionally, 0.8.1 features much more serious bugs than 0.8.2.

Note that you can still download 0.8.1, if you wish to.

I am running 10.3.9 and QuickTime 7.0.1. When I first installed 0.8.2 over the previous 0.8.1, I had the beachball of death but not the crashing reported in previous posts. I am NOT running any of the Unsanity haxies. After removing the org.videolan.vlc.plist file, the beachball is gone and I can run VLC fine again.

Thanks for a great piece of cross-platform software.

I found a possible source of the crashing -- it happened to me when I decided to enable the "Mac OS X interface" extra interface module and changed nothing else.

I had to delete my preferences again, but also the vlcrc file in ~/Library/Preferences/VLC/ in order to get it back to normal. Perhaps this is a solution for the others who are getting crashes?

Hi.
Love yr media player. Even better now. However I noticed that it wouldn't play dts on a dvd I was playing and when I used 0.8.1 it still played DTS. Don't know if that's a bug or not.
Fixing the time is nice :D although I can't seem to save a snapshot. I did select a folder under preferences but it's always empty.
Like the way you have redone the preferences; it's much more user friendly.

The bug that doesn´t allow a slash ('/') in file/folder names is back again, it remember this bug in 0.7.2beta or something after a report it got fixed in the next version. Now it´s back again in 0.8.2
