Firefox toubles - Ubuntu & Windows Xp

Postby englishmen » 20 Dec 2006 17:58

Has anyone got the vlc plugin for firefox working with ubuntu or windows xp?

On ubuntu i get a black box where embedded videos are saying "no video" on windows XP i understand there to be 2 files needed for vlc to work yet only 1 is included with vlc.exe(0.8.6), any suggestions how i can fix this on either OS?

Thanks

Is there a long standing bug in VLC or something where the plug-in doesn't work?

I recently managed to overcome (I hope) such problem on Windows by
1) unistall Firefox, VLC
2) install Firefox 2.0.0.1
3) install vlc 0.8.6, check plugins in installation.

Btw, after that, those two files (npvlc.dll, vlcintf.xpt) are not in the Firefox plugins folder.

And make sure that there is a stream going to the plugin.

I just had some problem with IE that I cannot reproduce now.
Actually it was all quite mysterious, not that I like it.

btw, did you try
http://people.videolan.org/~dionoea/vlc-plugin-demo/

what I forgot to mention - for me, when there is no stream or it is not started to play, the plugin in Firefox shows a black box with the text "(no video)". So far it is like in your case.

Same here no video box, damn this is annoying.

Why do the developers include a Mozilla plugin where i can find no evidence that it actually works? There are posts dotted all over the Ubuntu forums concerning this issue and no fix.

Well, the developers include it because it works for most people.
But not for everyone.
There seems to be conflicts between different version of VLC and of firefox, and upgrades. The no video means that VLC is started but does not start to play. But there is a bug that we need to investigate ! Add a ticket in the trac !

You say it works for most people and there is conflicts between different versions of VLC and Firefox, if this is the case what versions do work together?

Thanks

I've downloaded 0.8.5 and can now play embedded wmv videos which is great, however when i try to play quicktime trailers nothing happens. Does anyone have any suggestions how i can fix this, also when playing wmv there is no controls on the videos, is there suppose to be?

Thanks

I'm having the same problem. Using Ubuntu Edgy, Firefox 2.0.0.1, and VLC 0.8.6.

I click on the video and have a black box that says (No Video).

I do have the latest VLC plugin installed from the command line. One thing I do notice is that when I open Firefox, under Preferences<Content<Manage -- the filetype MPG (the file I'm trying to display in the browser is using the 'mplayerplug-in 3.31' plugin.

It doesn't really give me an option to use the VLC plugin that is installed -- there is no drop-down box and it won't permit me to type anything over the 'mplayerplug-in 3.31' that is there.

Is there a file I could edit, or can someone steer me in the right direction so I can click on a video file and have it played by VLC within the firefox browser?

I'm a linux n00b, so step-by-step instructions with filepaths would be a great help.

TIA fo helping with this shizzle.
