jump point and a .mpeg file

Postby jacksnodgrass » 05 Nov 2006 20:41

Say that I start playing a .mpeg file.
I am at 5:40 into the stream. Now I
want to jump ahead in time to 7:45.

Is there a way to do that? I have a
list of 'jump points' that I want to
be able to 'jump' to...

Thanks - jack

Through the use of chapters that can be embedded in the container this is possible.

Are you talking about doing a full blown DVD with menus and
chapter points or are you talking about just the .mpeg file itself?
I'm not familiar with .mpeg files and embedded chapter points.
Are these related to GOP things... I've heard of that but not sure
if that is mpeg / chapter related or not.

No not quite, as most containers and players don't support Menus yet outside of the DVD (DivX does but VLC does not support their subtitles, chapters or menus as the formats are closed source). Matroska, MPEG 4, OGG/OGM can support chapters and subtitles. Matroska can also support menus but the only support I'm aware of is VLC and it isn't well documented (at least that I have found). :)
