DVD: no video, no audio, no nothin'

Postby alisonc » 03 Dec 2003 10:26

I just tried using VLC 0.6.2 for the first time, to watch a Region 2 DVD on my Region 1 PowerBook 17" (OS 10.3.1).

I tried using open disc and choosing either DVD or Video_TS (and navigating to that folder on the DVD). I tried both checking and unchecking "Use DVD menu". I tried fiddling with the preferences. I tried putting video to full screen.

Every time, same thing: the disc sounds lke it's being accessed, but there's no video, no audio. The controller's play button turns to a pause button, but nothing's playing. If I have it set to play video full screen, the whole screen goes black and nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong??

VLC cannot override region setting on most recent DVD drives shipped with Apple computers...

The problem is that with some DVD drives shipped in recent macs, libdvdcss is unable to read DVD from non-matching zones.

Firmware patches exist, but of course, you apply them at your own risk (search in the forum for an adress where to find some, this question was asked a few days ago)

Thanks for the replies, guys. I checked out links to firmware hacks but unfortunely there are none available for the 17" PowerBook. Bummers :-(
