How to play a Video CD

I have a number of video CDs, however using the open disc -> VCD option doesn't play anything, there's a message "unable to read..."

Is there some special way these CDs need to be opened or added, or has an element of the chain been deprecated for licensing reasons, or something like that?

Please open Tools -> Messages (set Verbosity to 2) before you start the playback, keep the messages window open during the whole process and then paste the full resulting log here or on Pastebin.com or on Justpaste.it if it's too long.
