Added subtitles don't show up on replayed video

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Added subtitles don't show up on replayed video

Postby Epichall » 27 Sep 2024 12:36

Please be gentle with me - an elderly (70+) newbie to video editing.
I have two small queries to which I can't find the answer
Number One
So I've written an *.srt file using notetab and saved it
I've selected a video with VLC player
Using the "subtitle" header I've added in the *.srt file
The displayed screen pops up "subtitle added" and displays it bottom centre.
The video then plays with the subtitle correctly displayed.
But when I close VLC player, reopen it and replay the video, there's no subtitle.
I've tried the "convert/save" function with the "Use a Subtitle File" and saved it (using *.mp4 format as per the original video) there's still no subtitle played
I've checked in Tools/Preferences - Subtitles and the settings look OK to me (see screenshot)

There's probably something very basic that I'm not understanding here,so can anyone give me any advice or assistance?
Number Two
The subtitles that I want to insert only display at the bottom centre of the screen. Even when the setting that I've chosen is "top-right".
There's something probably very basic that I've not understood here too

1) For automatically playing a subtitle file give it the same name and put it in the same folder as the video file:
example.mp4
example.srt

2) When you make a change in the preferences don't forget to click on the Save button at the bottom then exit and restart VLC for the change to take effect.
