Why does VLC have so many problems working on a second monitor?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Why does VLC have so many problems working on a second monitor?

Postby LBJsPNS » 04 Mar 2024 15:52

VLC is the best open source video player out there, bar none. So why is it that it's so difficult to make it work with controls on one monitor and video on a second monitor? The Preferences settings simply don't work. In windows you have to enter screen coordinates etc to get it to work. In Linux it doesn't work at all, period.

I compare this to QLC+, an open source lighting, video, and sound control program. In VLC I click on the screen I want it to work on and click on the fullscreen checkbox and It Just Works. I've seen forums online with this question going back as far as 2009. Why is this particular problem so difficult?

Uh, works fine on Debian Linux for me. Just have to disable embedded video.

Really? What version of Debian, on what specific hardware? Because I've tried Debian, MX, Manjaro, KDE Neon, and several others with no success. Using Gnome, KDE, xfce, and lxqt DEs. I'm talking about repeatably putting the controls on monitor 1 and the video fullscreened on monitor 2. Doesn't matter what I do, including the tips for Windows to specify the X and Y coordinates. That at least works under Windows. It sure doesn't work under Linux. I've searched online for weeks and have found nothing that works. Inevitably the video opens on Monitor 1.

So no one else is having any problems getting VLC to open a fullscreen video on a second monitor reliably? Or at all? Seriously?
