Are any (L)GPL 3.0 components contained in the VLC binary downloads?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Are any (L)GPL 3.0 components contained in the VLC binary downloads?

Postby uszeiss » 12 Oct 2022 14:55

Hi all,

I would like to know if any (L)GPL 3.0 components are contained in the VLC binary packages for Mac or Windows when I download them from the VLC website. Specifically, I am interested in the 3.0.16 versions for win64 (ZIP) and macosx arm64/intel64 (DMG). I suppose the exact minor or patch version does not matter for my question.

I am asking because this press release hints at a potential inclusion of (L)GPL 3.0 components and this section of the README says: on some platforms, it is de facto GPLv3, because of the licenses of dependencies. Unfortunately, it does not say which platforms are affected or which dependencies come with GPL 3.0 licenses. And I failed to identify any (L)GPL 3.0 components in the downloaded packages by manual or tool-based (Scancode) analysis.

Could someone shine a light on this by providing more details on the (L)GPL components in the mentioned binary packages (if any)?

I'd very much appreciate any support.

Thanks,
Uwe

Yes. And even if it weren't, you really shouldn't expect a forum thread to substitute for due diligence.
