Is threr a tutorial about telnet interface ?

I connect very easily to "vlc -I telnet --telnet-password ttt" with
nc xxxx 4212

But what then ?
I ca get help command but how do I play some radio with some m3u :

I try :
>volume 100
>play my_radio.m3u

But I get no sound, and :
> status
( audio volume: 100 )
( state stopped )

What do I miss, is there a tutorial somewhere ...?
