Convert AVI to MP4: grainy mp4

I am converting avi files to mp4. I have tried various codecs. The resulting mp4s are noticeably grainier than the source avi. I took screenshots of each to illustrate the problem:

What impacts the image quality is the codec, not the container.

How did you convert? Which is the input codec, which is the output codec? Do you really want to transcode the video?

Thanks for your reply. As mentioned I tried various codecs, all with the same result. Happily, I finally got the job done using FabDVD Converter. Not that I am recommending FabDVD. Horrible and confusing UI, extremely deceptive pricing policies, no support. BUT, it did in the end do the job.
