True Timeshifting possible?

I want to timeshift a video capture device. Is that possible with VLC?

However, the time shifting people use DVR for is not just to pause but also skip ads. When I try to timeshift with VLC, I can pause and resume but I cannot FF forward or catch up. Am I missing something?

I am also trying other alternatives such as saving the stream to a file and playback using another VLC player but this results in significantly worse quality and also high CPU usage. Would appreciate if there is a good solution to this.

timeshift only handles pause, there's no way to seek as it is a generic implementation not designed for random access
