vlc player always cropped into a square

I've been having troubles recently. VLC is playing videos as a small cropped square, even in full screen. Playing with the aspect ratio, Crop, or zoom changes things but the video is still chopped of to the left and right. in Adjustments and effects/video effects/crop, all the values in Crop are 0. I thought maybe I need to update so I now have version 3.0.12. Still the same issue. Here's a screen shot of what it looks like. You can see how the name of the person on the left is cropped away. an equal amount is cropped from the right side. If I use any other media player, the videos play correctly.
