Is VLC implementation of AVI container outdated ?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Is VLC implementation of AVI container outdated ?

Postby ttr78 » 15 Mar 2021 22:18

Hello,
I wanted to create an AVI file then found that the file generated, and copied to an USB drive stick, cannot be read on my home DVD player, several TV sets (mine, and friends' ones), even a DVB-T receiver. These devices are about 6-8 yrs old or newer. Of course and happily the AVI file is readeable by the same VLC (version 3.0.12, the last one).
Investigating further, I generated an mkv file using exactly the same codecs and resolutions. This mkv file is perfectly read by all the above mentioned devices.
Still further, I tested the avi and mkv files on my old computer with Windows XP SP3 (more than 17 yrs old). Surprisingly, both files run well with such antiques as PowerDVD 5, Show Time 3 from Nero 7 suite.
So I wonder if the implementation of AVI container in present VLC would be outdated.

Thank you

It is not VLC that is outdated. The AVI container is outdated as a format.
