DVD subtitles not displaying

Postby discordance » 16 Feb 2012 15:00

Specifically LOTR is not displaying its subtitles for elvish spoken lines (WMP displays them fine) and District 9 has a lot of alien spoken lines that VLC is not displaying the subtitles for (again WMP works fine).

Fairly sure this is a general problem to VLC DVD playing as the only options are subtitles tracks or disable. Which is not the complete picture as many DVDs are expecting their subtitles to be displayed for non-english lines. Please add another subtitles option for these untracked subs.

This is working fine in VLC. You need to enable subtitles and select the correct subtitle track as normal. There will be a track that provides text only when the talking is not in English.

Ack sorry I just double checked LOTR (Fellowship extended) that works fine.

But district 9 still doesn't work. I'm running 1.1.11, there is no track for non-english only subs. District 9 has 4 tracks, full english, hindi, close captioned, and commentary only.

4 available tracks in WMP and in VLC. No track selected in WMP and I get subs for alien speech, VLC with no subtitles track displays nothing. Theres some untracked subs on the district 9 dvd.

Please. Please. Please, fix this. VLC is the perfect program except for this shortcoming. Why has this been overlooked for so long?

This is a sincere call to encourage the developers of VLC to give attention to this issue.

I am sure others will share my sentiment when I say I feel this issue is far more important than making the interface prettier or some of the other superfluous updates that have been made.

If I could speak directly to the leaders of this project, I would strongly encourage them to focus on completing the inherent functionality of the DVD format. To me it should be a paramount initiative on a project of this scale.

I guess they are some DVDs using forced subtitles.

I know this is an ancient thread, but I came across this thread looking for a solution to Star Wars Ep IV not showing subtitles for alien languages. Perhaps the solution I found might help others who come across this thread:

The solution to this with the Star Wars Episode IV DVD is that you need to select the Subtitle listed as "Track 3 - [Spanish]".

Once you do, you will see the subtitles for the alien languages. You will NOT see subtitles for anything spoken in english.

I haven't checked this with the other Star Wars DVD's yet. If I find differences, I will post them here as I find them.
