Hotkeys adjust volume higher than QT maximum.

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Hotkeys adjust volume higher than QT maximum.

Postby ThePhxRises » 11 Feb 2020 02:08

Setting the maximum volume displayed in the QT interface does not stop me from bringing the volume above the amount I set when using hotkeys to adjust the volume. This is very frustrating because I use global hotkeys to control VLC while it stays in the background. The fact that I can't turn the volume to 100% with the hotkeys without going over 100% is ridiculous. All the "max volume" setting does is tell me that the volume is 100%, when in reality it can be way higher and cause distortion (and not to mention that it hurts my ears).

Why exactly is there absolutely no way for me to tell VLC that I want the volume to never go above 100% no matter which method I use to adjust it?

Because most users expect the opposite - that VLC can go over 100%, even if their OS vendors tries hard to prevent it.

Okay well, I'm glad your response is completely irrelevant and doesn't address my issue at all. I'm not asking about what the "OS Vendor" is trying to do (and I highly doubt Microsoft or Linux devs give a flying flip about VLC's volume) I want to be able to control my own dang volume, which seems like a very basic request.

I also don't care what other users expect. The default functionality is not of concern to me, I just want the option to tell VLC "hey, never go over this volume under any circumstances, thanks," instead of the totally useless "hey VLC, when you inevitably go above the maximum volume I have set, just lie to me about it and tell me you're still at my maximum." It could literally be effectively limited with a single if then statement and a single variable for the max volume. Other people can still have their 400% volume audio soup if they want it for some insane reason.

If you think the currently functionality makes sense, go ahead and rewrite VLC's logger to straight up lie about all of the information it outputs. See how well that works out.

Without basic control over things as simple as adjusting the volume, (which users have been asking for for going on 7 years now) I guess VLC doesn't suit my needs, so I'll be using foobar2000 for music playback instead.

And your unwillingness to give any consideration to your users is why VLC is still lacking in basic quality of life features after all this time.

Ignoring what the people USING a program want from it and assuming you know better (and refusing to provide options to adjust functionality you think people are wrong for wanting) is how you end up with obtuse software.
