can't network stream flac files

Postby rblack2001 » 28 Jul 2018 16:37

Hi. This might have been asked/answered - but I did not find the post.

I play music via Logitech Media Server; sometimes I use the "network stream" feature on VLC to play these files on a computer.

This worked fine when my music files were mp3. Under Media>Network Stream I'd type in the URL of the computer hosting the music and Logitech Media Server (e.g. http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.mp3) and VLC played the files. Still does for mp3 files.

However, using http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.flac will not play flac files. Also http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.ogg will not play ogg files. I get an error message to check log files in both cases.

I also tried http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.flc - this didn't work, either.

I checked messages (which I assume are the log files) and saw "core error: open of `http://192.168.1.239:9000/stream.flc' failed" and the same for each format that did not play.

Thanks.

Hi. Thanks for your prompt reply.

I'm not sure this is the log file; I found it under Tools>Messages. These are from when I tried to play the network stream: http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.flc

Code: Select all

main info: playlist is empty access error: HTTP 404 error http error: error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
I don't know much about computers but enough to know an HTTP 404 error; it means VLC cannot find/get access to the computer at that address; i.e. the music server running Logitech Media Server.

I can see the second error HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found is more complex. Which is over my head.

However, again, the same URL with an mp3 at the end i.e. http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.mp3 works fine.

These are the messages/logs from connecting the mp3 stream:

Code: Select all

main info: playlist is empty prefetch error: unimplemented query (264) in control
Please advise if these are not the log files.

Also, is there a network stream URL I can use that will play all music files which VLC can play? The .mp3 .flc etc. at the end seems limiting - especially if I do "shuffle play" or the like.

And - I assume network streaming an flc/ogg file is possible using VLC. Sorry - I just feel lost.

Again, thanks.

access error: HTTP 404 error

Are you sure you are giving the right link?

I'm sure.

I use the same URL for each format - with a different extension; mp3 vs flc vs ogg. The mp3 files play. So, yes - the link is correct.

I'm wondering if this is a Logitech Media Server problem. Which I know is not something you can help with.

When I open a browser tab and type http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.mp3 music will play and "Mozilla" with the IP address of the browser is listed in Logitech Media Server under the "Choose Player" tab - even though I'm using Chrome ATM.

When I type in http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.mp3 or http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.ogg I get

Code: Select all

"This site can’t be reached The webpage at http://192.168.1.124:9000/stream.flc might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address. ERR_INVALID_RESPONSE"
Same response for .ogg but with an error message that says stream.ogg can't be reached - etc.

However, the browser only displays this message when I type in the URL + extension for the IP address of the server running Logitech Media Server.

When I type in a URL for a local network IP address that is not being used and hit "enter" - nothing happens. No error message, etc.

So I'm thinking it's a reply from Logitech Media Server. I thought maybe I needed to unblock port 9000 on the media server - which is running Ubuntu Live Server 18.04 headless - but VLC can connect through that port to play mp3 files so that does not seem to be the issue.

But, still ...

I don't understand how VLC will play different formats with the same extension in the network link.

IE will vlc play .ogg and .flc files with the same URL/link in network stream? Assume for the moment I'm using the correct URL and extension - which, as I said, I am.

Is there a link I could enter to play all audio files?

In other words, assuming everything works, will I need to change the URL/link for each format?

Thanks for your time. I'm checking the Logitech Media Server site but no luck so far.

To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

Hi. First - sorry to take so long to reply. I was stumped/fed up. I felt we were going in circles - partly because I did not realize I had to set to logging to "2"; so, thank you for finally pointing that out.

Anyway.

Computer: Fedora 30 64-bit; VLC 3.0.7.1 Venetian

VLC plays mp3, flac etc. if the files are on the same computer; the problem, again, is getting flac files to stream from an Ubuntu 18.04 media server running Logitech Media Server.

I can stream mp3 files fine. Flac files never play; I get error messages.

The VLC log is located here https://pastebin.com/GyyDwgZn

The Logitech Media Server log file for this particular problem is, essentially, the same line again and again:

Code: Select all

[19-07-13 12:02:31.9066] Slim::Player::Song::open (410) Error: Couldn't create command line for flc playback for [file:///mnt/MUSIC1.2/CDsAdded2019/CDsAddedJuly2019/David%20Crosby%20-%20Croz/11.%20Find%20A%20Heart%20-%20David%20Crosby%20-%20Croz.flac]
I have the same issue whatever computer I use - whether it's Windows 7; Ubuntu; Linux Mint. Yes, this leads me to think the problem could well be with LMS / Ubuntu media server. But I need to start somewhere.

Thanks for your time.

OK - problem solved. I had to install LAME on the Ubuntu Media Server; adjust a setting in LMS and all was good.

I'd mark it SOLVED at top but I can't figure out how to do that, either.

SOLVED.
