VLC crashes entire system, multiple OS

Postby flynx42 » 04 Feb 2016 19:34

Good Morning!

I have had trouble using VLC in a demonstration environment because of machine hard freezes. This has occurred on multiple machines (shuttle, HP) multiple operating systems (Ubuntu, Windows, RedHat) and with multiple video formats (avi and mpeg) although both videos were H.264.

If I leave the video playing on repeat and come back a day later, the machine will be frozen. In linux I attempted ALT-F1 and ALT-PrtScn-REISUB. In Windows I tried CTRL+ALT+DEL. Nothing works except to hold down the power button until the system resets.

I checked the system logs and nothing seemed unusual. When the system froze the CPU usage, CPU temp, and memory usage all seemed normal.

I'm running another test now with the verbose VLC log enabled, and I'm re-encoding the video to something other than h.264. Any other advice?

Thanks
