3.0.3 update made things worse

3.0.3 update made things worse

Postby p90life » 05 Jun 2018 07:59

I updated VLC with promises of improved performance in 4k and whatnot.
After the update I noticed two annoying things:
-The player sometimes starts in a tiny, audio-player-like size. I can't find an option to disable this.
-Playback of certain videos is now choppy. It was perfectly fine before (the only time i noticed anything off was indeed in 4k 60 fps (and even then only SOME), but now it's staggering on a 1080p 24 fps file. I tried all the different hardware acceleration settings as well as disabling it.

Also I'm like, half sure that pressing space used to play the last played file right after starting the app, now it only does that if i started playback in another way first, then stopped and hit space.

I'm tempted to just revert to the last major version but since the older installer doesn't seem to acknowledge the newer version, I'm afraid of losing my settings if i uninstall first.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I installed 2.2.8 (from http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc) over the 3.0.3 without uninstalling 3.0.3 first. That may not be advisable! But so far it still works and I have both versions (I put 2.2.8 in a new folder /VLCOLD so /VLC is not overwritten. In the Start menu I now go to 2.2.8, the quick link in the Task Bar is still 3.0.3) although I might lose the easy link on the desktop to 3.0.3 when I restart Windows. You don't have to lose the settings. 3.0.3 in some cases is unusable, certain files can not be played with it. In addition to viewing problems also audio is sometimes subtly distorted. For instance at the beginning of this film (after about 1 minute so it's not simply the visual MPEG distortion that occurs at the beginning sometimes) there is an audio quote of, I think, CNN journalist Bernard Shaw saying "Clearly, I've never been there". But with 3.0.3 you hear music, but not the quote anymore.
