DVDs close after sleep?

i'm not sure if this is a windows specific issue or not, so posting here. i'm on a laptop, and during my views, i'll have to pause, close the lid and move. when i sit back down and try to resume my movie (typically pressing space for pause/play) it starts for a couple seconds, the dvd starts spinning as normal, but then VLC just stops playback altogether, like i stopped playback. only time this has happened after i've closed/opened the lid, doing it normally has no issue
