Extracting Audio

Hi all

I hope someone can help me out.

I'm trying to extract the audio track from a region 1 DVD of an artist painting a picture and talking about the process. I'm in Australia, region 4.
VLC plays the dvd from my laptop drive with no problems, but when I try and rip the audio it does nothing. I've tried similar region 4 discs and there's no prob.
I'm thinking the disc has copy protection or there's a compatibility issue with VLC? I'm guessing. Can anyone offer a fix?
