VLC can't open my playlist "bad file descriptor"?

Postby VLC_noobz » 30 Jun 2013 13:59

Hello all! This is my first post on this forum, as you can probably tell.

I have used been using VLC since I can remember and had no issues with it, besides now. I have asked this question on several forums and websites before this, so here is a quote from my post on the PCGuide forums:
I have a VLC playlist that I have been building up for the past year or so; it has over 200 songs. In the past 2 months though, I have been unable to open it. Here is the error log for one of my songs:
File reading failed:
VLC could not open the file "C:\Users\Nino\Desktop\Drifting Soundtracks\Alex Clare - Too Close (OFFICIAL VIDEO).mp4". (Bad file descriptor)
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///C:/Users/Nino/Desktop/Drifting%20Soundtracks/Alex%20Clare%20-%20Too%20Close%20%28OFFICIAL%20VIDEO%29.mp4'. Check the log for details.

I can supply the full error log if needed, but it will just be the same error over and over again for each song, so what's the point?

I've tried making VLC startup when my Windows 7 32-bit boots up, but that doesn't fix it. I've looked in the system registry but I have no idea what I'm doing I've made sure that my firewall does not block VLC. I've also tried dragging the playlist to an open VLC window; that doesn't work. I've done many other things, such as delete preferences and cache, to try and solve this issue, all to no avail.

Please help? I have no idea what else to do, this playlist is very important to me. I know for a fact that the songs are still arranged in the same order, as I can see them behind the error message. I've never had issues with VLC before.
Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!
Here is a link to the same question on Yahoo Answers, in case this issue does get resolved...somehow.
Yahoo Answers question!

and my PCGuide thread!

I don't know what else to do and I am on the verge of deleting my playlist and uninstalling VLC, please help? My other playlists work perfectly, it's just this one.
Thanks in advance!

Please read the following instructions and paste the log at pastebin.com or another paste site, and paste the link to the paste here.
To help you, we need messages, to completely understand what your problems is.
To fix this, please be sure before you start the playback to:
  1. Open: Tools -> Messages.
  2. Set Verbosity to 2
  3. Start playback to reproduce your issue
  4. Save text in a file or copy into clipboard
  5. Then paste the full resulting log here between [code]and[/code] (or use Pastebin.com if it's too long)
Also don't forget to name your Operating System and provide the VLC media player version.

I just posted about VLC not opening files that do not have a modified date, and on NTFS filesystem.
try touching the file with a program that will alter the modified date, like beyond compare, or move the file to a fat formatted usb and see if the file works then.

i was getting the same "Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'file:///C:/Users/***" (my file info ) error and this allows the file to be played fine.

fstat() failing would be a bug in the C run-time. I do not know if the code is Microsoft's or MingW's, but it is probably not VLC's.

I had the same problem with the "bad file descriptor" turns out the folder I saved the file to had messed up permissions... right click on the file you want to play click Properties > security tab and add yourself as a user ...check the full control box and save ... has fixed my problem hopefully this helps you out.

This issue will be fixed if you copy the file paste it in different location of you hard drive. The issue might be caused because someone removed your access fro that file. You will able to identify it if you got properties of that file properties->security->group or user names.. If you are not able to see your computer name under this box,Probably someone removed your access to that file.

So change you location of your file you ll get access while pasting to other location it will ask admin access.

I hope this will work.!!!!

Muni

Hi, I see this message only when a hyphen (') is in the filename of an m3u playlistfile. F.e. Lookin’ Out My Back Door
The same file dragged to VLC's window plays the file correctly.
Using VLC 2.2.4 Weatherwax on a Window's 8.1 64 bit OS, x64 based processor
