Selecting audio channels to play audio file

Postby deejay808 » 22 Sep 2016 14:19

I want to use VLC as a backing track player to live music. For this, I have the audio file with the backing track that must be played for the audience. Furthermore, there is a click track that should play alongside for the musicians in their headphones and should not be heard by the audience.
The idea is to use a laptop with a 5.1 sound card and to use vlc playing the stereo backing track over e.g front left/right and another instance of vlc playing the click track over e.g. surround left/right.
I already found out that it is possible to start 2 instances of vlc playing audio simultaneously using the command line.
So, the questions are:
1) can I use vlc to play a stereo track over selected audio channels?
2) if so, can I do this by using the command line?
3) is there a solution/easier solution to accomplish this?

Thanks!
