VLC playout buffer statistics

Hi,

I'm doing some research work on rate adaptation algorithms for DASH/adaptive streaming methods. I'd like to observe the fluctuations of buffer occupancy during a streaming session.
I need help on extracting VLC playout buffer statistics. Which variable in the source code should I be keeping track of?
