Subtitles work beautifully - but...

I have a number of commercial VCD disks, which VLC 0.7 plays beautifully on my Mac PowerBook G4 running OS 10.3.2. Could some kind person tell me if it's possible to remove them, when playing this type of disk?

'Subtitles track' in the 'Video' menu is greyed out.

How ungrateful can you be - when they're working so well, but after watching a foreign film with subtitles on in order to follow the plot, I would like to remove them, to follow the spoken language with no distraction.

I would be very grateful for any help or advice.
