tldr: Can I configure VLC to only pass AC3 through SPDIF and have DTS transcoded to AC3?
Recently I got a new motherboard (ALC1150) and decided to enable Dolby for better surround with my old Creative Inspire 5.1 decoder.
The decoder still works okay and is more than sufficient for gaming and the occasional movie. However, it can only decode Dolby, no DTS.
When I play AC3 files in VLC; everything works ok. DTS obviously does not work.
1. How can I make sure DTS is not passed through over SPDIF but first transcoded to an AC3 stream before going out to the receiver?
2. Is it alternatively possible to configure a keyboard shortcut to switch between passthrough and VLC decoding to PCM?
I left no stone unturned (I think) as I fiddled with it all night (from getting Dolby Digital going (unlock it) on the Realtek drivers, to actually getting 5.1 to work).
Thanks!
In any case, getting decent surround to work with a digital surround set on PCs is proving to be a real nightmare. (I remember I got a nforce2 motherboard back in the day, 10 years ago, to get that decoder to work properly!
