Japanese subtitles partially not working!

Postby hamsteriffic » 13 Feb 2015 14:47

Hi, this is my first post here. I wasn't sure if I should post this here or in the Windows-specific section, but hopefully I was right to post here. I already searched around but didn't find an answer to my problem.

I have a .SRT file with japanese content (Kanji). When I first tried to see them in VLC, they all showed as boxes. I searched for a solution and found that I had to change a few configurations of VLC. I followed the instructions on this link.

The subtitles, that were all boxes, now worked PARTIALLY. See the image below:

A few of the Kanji still showed as boxes. I can see them perfectly in Notepad. This is the part of the SRT file which corresponds to the image:

Code: Select all

1 00:03:12,626 --> 00:03:16,063 <振り子は振れ戻る。
The screenshot was taken with the Batang font. When I tried changing the font to Arial Unicode MS - a surprise! The "glitched" characters changed! Boxes showed in place of OTHER Kanji. It seems the glitched characters depend on the font. But this is weird: in Notepad, I can see all of them with both fonts.

Any help is appreciated!

EDIT: I cut the screenshot to show the subtitle only, without polluting the post.

You need to select a different font. Notepad uses a way to do fallback of fonts

Thank you very much. It finally worked with the Meiryo font.
